S.M.A.R.T. Goal Setting
Today we learned about setting goals. We had great discussions about goals that each student has had in the past and how to create new goals. We used the acronym S.M.A.R.T. as a way to remember how to goal set. We will spend time over the next week developing goals in reading, writing, math, learning environment, and a personal goal. With each goal students will make action steps to work on the achieve their goals. Please ask your student over the next week about their goals and the goal setting process! Maybe having a home goal would be a fun way to connect school and home!

Hough Dedication and Time Capsule
In honor of Hough's dedication and the time capsule that will be placed in the front wall of the school, we took a little trip to look at the hole in the wall where our class book will go. It is so neat to think that 30 + years from now students may get to open our time capsule.

Building a reading life by treating reading like it is gold!
Over the next few weeks we will continue our journey to build reading lives that are meaningful. Your child will be analyzing their reading life in order to find "what is working" and "what is not working." Students are finding "just right books" and are working hard to discover the joy of getting lost in a good book. By thinking of reading as a special part of our lives, we then make it a priority. One great discussion we had today was about picking the best time to read. We decided that unlike when we were little and we would read right before bed, now we need to read at a time when we can really pay attention and sustain our reading for 30 minutes. Please help your child build their reading life at home as we continue to build their reading life at school. Reading is like gold! Here are photos of our class working to build our reading lives

First Week in 3rd grade
We had a great week getting to know each other and starting to learn and grow together! We start our day with Math everyday and Chapter 1 is place value. This is a great way for me to see how well the class understands numbers. Building number sense is so important in 3rd grade. We also began establishing our class routines for Reading Workshop and Independent Reading. The class has impressed me with their willingness to read, read, read! In writing we started with a 45 minute writing where students could show me what they remember about writing from previous grades. We also did something called the one minute write where I give students 2 words and they pick one that they write about for a minute. Then they see how many words they wrote in a minute...we do this for 3 rounds and they see that when they focus on writing they can write a lot!
Thank you for supporting your child! We will talk more about expectations and class procedures at Back to school night on September 8th at 7:00.
